Zero k book review7/6/2023 ![]() ![]() The amount of time this transformation might take? No one quite tells us that. But the compound isn’t any ordinary brick and mortar structure it is a highly advanced, scientifically augmented laboratory where living men and women surrender their bodies to be preserved in cryogenic pods and whereupon, a series of radical and cutting-edge innovative methods are applied to them with an objective to bring them to life in much more robust, transcendent and resilient human forms. The novel follows Jeffrey Lockhart, who is invited by his wealthy father, Ross Lockhart, to witness the final days of his ailing wife, Artis, at an isolated compound, in one of the remotest corners of Russia. ![]() DeLillo’s Zero K sits somewhere on this scale. From ages, this unknown, unattainable stage has drawn the attention of thinkers and the results have spanned the entire continuum of credibility and flimsiness. The battle to outlive life and peek into the world beyond has been an area of great fascination. ![]()

Jackaby by william ritter7/5/2023 ![]() ![]() Supporting characters, especially a female ghost whose exasperation with the detective belies affection and a former assistant turned "temporarily waterfowl" - yes, he's a duck - add humor and texture. Abigail's level-headed perspective serves as the perfect window onto Jackaby's occupation, lending plausibility to even the most fantastical turn of events. ![]() Her first outing with Jackaby is to the scene of a brutal murder where the evidence, in his opinion, points to a nonhuman culprit. Ritter wastes no time in helping her find what she seeks. Restless and ill-content with her proper English upbringing, she steps off the boat in 1892 at the fictional New England harbor city of New Fiddleham ripe for the adventure that has thus far eluded her during her travels. ![]()

![]() ![]() He talks to Robert Siegel about his experiments, which involve activities such as mock auctions, trick-or-treating and selling chocolate to college students. "Our willingness to pay, it turns out, is not just a function of the utility of the pleasure that we expect to get from, it's also influenced by all kinds of irrelevant factors that change our psychology but not our economic reasoning," Ariely says.Īriely is on the faculty of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology he's currently on leave and teaching at Duke University. Predictably Irrational explains how the reasoning behind those decisions is often flawed because of the invisible forces at work in people's brains: emotions, expectations and social norms. ![]() ![]() Instead, he finds, humans are "predictably irrational," which is also the title of his latest book. His conclusion? We don't do it the way economists typically say we do. As a behavioral economist, Dan Ariely studies the way people make economic decisions. ![]()

The Great Escape by Paul Brickhill7/4/2023 ![]() ![]() And I plan on doing both before the war's over.Īre all American officers so ill-mannered? So we are both grounded for the duration of the war. I suppose what's called in the American Army, "A hotshot pilot." Unfortunately, you were shot down anyway. You are the first American officer I have met.
